Bonaire - March 2018 As with the October 2017 the trip, it was booked through ‘Bonaire Fun Travel’, staying in the Buddy Dive Resort. Shore diving was either from the house reef or using the drive through pickup facility. Boat diving was either on the Buddy Dive Resort hard boats or the Bonaire East Coast Diving RHIB. We had 34 dives in total, 16 from hard boat, 4 from RHIB and 14 shore dives; all dives were great, the most memorable being: The wreck of the Hilma Hooker, which we dived from the shore this time and were the only divers on it, the tarpon just ignored us. ‘Lac Funchi Reef and Turtle City’ on the east coast, tarpon, stingrays, eagle rays and turtles. Batchelor’s Beach for a night dive to see the Ostracod display. These tiny shrimp like creatures mate 4 to 6 days after full moon and 45 mins after sunset. The display last around 25 mins on a sandy bottom in about 6 m and the bioluminescence coming up from the bottom as a crescendo light strings was mesmerizing. Water temperature was 27 deg C and air temperature 34 deg C so a bit cooler than in October. When we arrived the sea was unusually calm on the east coast and we made our way to Cai to see if we could shore dive. It was a fun drive, meeting a friendly horse in the middle of the road and good to see the heaps of conch shells but we felt we really needed a local guide who knew the currents etc. The trip around Gotomeer and the Washington Slagbaai National Park was rounded of with a trip to the Caduchy cactus distillery at Rincon.
